Quentin in Manila

Could it be true that fellow comic book fan and bad-ass movie director Quentin Tarantino is coming to town?

I got wind of this juicy bit of news from one of the Mailing Lists that I am included in.

Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill) will be hitting Philippine shores in August to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award during special ceremonies in the 9th Cinemanila International Film Festival.

Tarantino will be receiving the distinction for his iconic contributions to world cinema and continued support to the proliferation and promotion of Asian and independent films. He will also be giving a lecture on filmmaking during the second of two Grindhouse Days: Directing Workshops, on 11 August at the Gateway Cineplex 10 Cinema 4.

Tarantino’s love for Asian films has inspired him to make use of various cinematic styles from films of the region such as wire kung-fu scenes, sword fights and stylized action scenes in his own movies. His admiration for Asian cinema has made him one of its most significant advocates; the release of Zhang Yimou’s Hero and Wong Kar Wai’s Chungking Express in the United States were made possible by Tarantino.

Renowned for cult favorites like Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, Tarantino has won accolades and citations from various groups, including an Oscar nomination for his direction of the critically acclaimed film Pulp Fiction. In 2004, he was selected to be the head of the jury of the Cannes Film Festival.

Catch renowned director Quentin Tarantino as he graces the Festival this August. The Cinemanila International Film Festival, now on its 9th year, will have its official run from 8 to 19 August 2007 at Gateway Mall Cineplex 10 in Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City, and from 17 to 19 August 2007 in Boracay Island. It will showcase the best of local and foreign cinema, including recent winners from the Berlin and Cannes film festivals. The Opening Ceremonies will be on 8 August at the Gateway Cinema Lobby. Cinemanila will also be having a special Focus on the films of South Africa (9 August) and Bollywood (10 August). Everyone is invited to these screenings and to the seminars and workshops. These include a seminar on the Importance of Film Archiving in the Philippines (9 August), Grindhouse Days: Directing Workshops (10-11 August), a Master Class in Scriptwriting (12 August), a Master Class in Cinematography (13 August), and a seminar on Indie Filmmaking (15-16 August). All of these seminars and workshops will be held at the Gateway Cineplex Cinema 4 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

The CIFF is organized jointly by the Independent Cinema Association of the Philippines (ICAP), the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and a specially commissioned inter-agency committee, with Major Partners: the Office of the President, the Department of Tourism, CinemaOne, and Gateway Cineplex 10; Gold Sponsors: Manila Bulletin, Philippine Airlines, and Web Philippines Inc.; Festival Sponsor: ClicktheCity. com; Event Sponsors: Asian Spirit and Boysen Paints.

For more information, you may refer to the official CIFF website at or contact the Cinemanila Secretariat through its email address, cinemanila(at)gmail(dot)com.

The Transformation of Asian Comic Books

A thought-provoking article I wanted to share with you guys out there.

In the Philippines, there is even a genre called Pinoy (Philippine) manga. New companies are doing Pinoy manga, such as Culture Crash and Questor, and, artists are following the Japanese style. Although some commentators feel manga and anime have brought Filipinos back to comics, others think they have removed the Philippines’ illustrious history of komiks production from public consciousness.

Eight Random Things About Me

…from Rico’s post here.

Let randomness ensue!

  1. I play the guitar and have a band. In fact for a time, people in college thought I’d be pursuing a musical career instead of the visual arts.
  2. I actually know two girls who have been featured on FHM. One is a friend of mine who used to be a fellow DJ at our College FM Station and the other is a more recent friend of mine.
  3. I wall climb despite a fear of heights.
  4. I have to be doing several things most of the time or I get bored. So, at any given time you’d probably find me alternating between drawing, texting, and surfing.
  5. Never touched alcohol until after I graduated from college. Two years after I graduated, to be specific. Even to this day, I only drink in social situations.
  6. I can’t dance to save my life. The less said about that, the better!
  7. I like suits. I won’t wear them everyday mind you (with the Philippine weather being what it is!?) but I do enjoy occasions that require I wear something other than my usual jeans, shirts, and sneaker ensemble.
  8. I was a peer counselor back in college. Some friends will argue that I still am to this day.

Now, I tag Therese, Drew, Chito, Jimbo, Sorsi, Chuck, Joel, and Jun.

Bill does the Marcoses

Bill Sienkiewicz is one of comic-dom’s most respected artist with such works as Elektra: Assassin and the comic adaptation of Dune under his belt. Aside from his stuff in comic books he is also an accomplished visual artist often using oil painting, collage, mimeograph.

It recently came to my attention (via Budjette Tan) that he once did a caricature of the former President Marcos and his First Lady.

WASTED Goes Online!

No, it’s not a joke.

wastedad.jpg

Gerry Alanguilan is bringing his opus WASTED to the web and it’s all going to start happening this Monday, July 16, 2007. Why bring it to the web though?

The decision to do it came with my decreasing wariness about webcomics and acceptance that it’s a strong and valid way to share stories.
