The Geeks are Gigging

Tonight’s the night as Dylan Liwanag, our band, plays for the very first time at Mag:net Katipunan.

What’s this got to do with comics, I hear you ask? Well, the band members are composed of comic book creators! Yes, indeed. The line-up are as follows:

Jerald Dorado (Pinoy Passenger creator) on lead vocals,  Alex Aguilar (penciller) on lead guitars , Jonas Diego (webkomikero/blogger) on vocals/rhythm guitars, Dave Gonzales (colorist) on base guitars, and Franklin Ouano (penciller/colorist) on drums.

It’s a short set (4-5 songs), our gig tonight. Taking baby steps, you might say.

So, if you find yourself in the area, haul yourself over to Mag:net and say hello!

New Look!

I finally installed my webcomic blog’s new theme (or rather, my tech guy did).

I spent most of the day adjusting some things here and there but I am pretty happy with the new look and all. A great big “thank you!” is due to a certain Mr. Rico Sta. Cruz, the designer of my new blog theme. Check out his site here and see what he can do for your blog.

While you’re at it, check out the wonder that he did for mine!

Vhong IS Lastikman

Remember back in January after seeing Agent X44 I suggested that actor Vhong Navarro would be perfect to play Lastikman if they ever made another movie about the local superhero (click here to read the article again)?

Well, it’s not going to be a movie…but a TV series. Guess who’s playing Lastikman?

Do I know how to call them or what?

Check the trailer out here.

Mike Wieringo Passes Away

I just received word that Mike Wieringo has recently passed away (August 12, 2007) at the age of 44.

Michael “Mike” Wieringo (June 24, 1963 [1]-August 12, 2007[2]) was an American comic book artist. He first came to prominence in the comic book industry for his work on DC ComicsThe Flash with writer Mark Waid in the early 1990s. After his short run on the the Flash Wieringo briefly worked on another DC title, this time Robin with writer Chuck Dixon, before leaving DC for Marvel Comics.

The information is sketchy but it seems he was the victim of a fatal heart attack. I’ve been trying to find news online but was unable to find anything more substantial. The closest I can get to an actual confirmation is on his Wikipedia entry.

Anyway, condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Mike.

Back to the 80s

voltron.jpg“Activate interlocks, dynatherms connected, infracells are up, mega-thrusters are go!”

If you recognize the preceding line then you know definitely know Voltron: Defender of the Universe.

One of the more popular franchises from the 80s, Voltron had it all: good ratings, a toyline, and comics. One of the things I enjoyed about the show was Peter Cullen’s voice over every start of the show.

“From days of long ago…from uncharted regions of the universe, comes a legend. The legend of Voltron. A mighty robot. Loved by good, feared by evil.”

Peter Cullen is the voice talent that gave Optimus Prime life in the cartoon series and in the movies.

Apparently, after Transformers’ success at the box office, the powers-that-be finally gave the proposed Voltron Movie the green light.

After the resounding success of this year’s Transformers, it seems the animated-robot genre has been officially revived. Voltron, a 1984 animated series about five space explorers, their beastly robot cars, and the eponymous, significantly larger robot they all become, is on its way to the big screen with Voltron: Defender of the Universe. After years on the shelf, Transformers has suddenly given the project a bit more appeal, and according to producer Mark Gordon, it’s going to be big.
