My HART will go on

I wrote about Johnny Hart yesterday, creator of the popular comic strip B.C. Click here if you haven’t read it yet.

He passed away the other day and his family will make sure that his comic strip still continue to run by producing new material using archives that the artist has left behind. This is nothing new of course, seeing as United Media did the same thing with Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts” when he died back in 2000.

Well, not exactly similar, since they ran old comic strips instead.

Well I suppose that’s a good thing for Johnny Hart because his name and contribution to society at large is not forgotten (and it ensures that his loved ones continue to profit and thrive from his life’s work).

It just feels a bit weird to me because you know that the creator is dead but his comics is still running. You see comic books and comic strips are extensions of the comic book creator’s personality. It is his voice and he uses it to “talk” to his readers.

With it he makes us laugh, cry, excited, and (from time to time) it makes us think.

It feels weird because the man behind that voice, the B.C. comic strip, is no longer there.

Before some of you out there get your tail-feathers in a huff, let me say that no I am not saying the comics should not be continued. Who am I to decide such things for other people.

I’m just saying it feels weird to me.

I remember Johnny Hart for his other comic strip, The Wizard of Id. He was a pretty controversial guy.

Yeah, according to one of the message boards I go to, he was anti-semitic.

Sorry for the off-tangent, but the last part of this post resonated with me.

I remember watching an interview of Charles Schulz, done a few days after he retired. And I found myself crying when he sadly said something like “you know, Charlie Brown never got to kick that football!” :(

Will answer this in a post.
