Where’re the Kids!?

leave a response

The upcoming Komiks Congress has me a bit worried lately.

Apparently, as far as I can tell, the new generation of comic book creators and publishers is severely under-represented with the majority of the people sitting in the Congress coming from the veterans’ ranks. Then again the purpose of the Congress is to “promote awareness of the past Glory of the Philippine Komiks Industry…”

If such was the case then there’s really no problem at all.

However, the Komiks Congress also aims to “…create new actions to refresh it (the Philippine Komiks Industry) and be able to campaign for public acceptance once again”.

I feel that there must also be consultation with the younger generation if the Komiks Industry is to be revived and, indeed, if it is to be sustainable in the long run.

The playing field has changed radically from yesteryears and there are so much more avenues that Komiks can reach and so much more it can become. There is a lot we can learn from each other given half the chance.

I’m hoping that the doors be opened for more delegates to represent the current crop of creators and publishers.

I’m writing about the same thing for the blog as well. It is true that we are a bit underrepresented. To me that is an indication of one of two things, one is that they are not fully aware of us and our accomplishments, or two, they believe our accomplishments are insignificant and not worth noting. I tend to believe in the former for now. Although it may not be possible to increase our ranks considerably, I’m doing what I can with the video that will be shown at the congress. I’m still collecting footage from other creators, hoping I could get more voices heard and show them exactly how much and how important our contributions have been, and most importantly, we are the future of Philippine comics and that it would be wise to have them hear us.

Well, hopefully you’re right and it’s just a lack of awareness.

I’m writing another article about it, tungkol naman sa indie creators and publishers. Hopefully I can finish and upload it tonight. :)

They should just wait for the other indie creators that will show in the Komiks Congress. They might be surprised to hear their opinions.

Jonathan, yes indeed. Both can learn a lot from each other. :)
