Ghost Rider was BAD (No Spoilers)!

leave a response

And I mean bad as in “bad” and not “good”.

I made a quick getaway yesterday from work at around 3:00 PM to catch the first day run of Ghost Rider starring Nicholas Cage. One reason is that I am a big fan of the Ghost Rider comic books and the kind of movies Nicholas Cage makes (well, not all of them…Wickerman comes to mind). Also, I wanted to avoid the crowds that were sure to come brought upon by the madness that is Valentine’s Day.

So, off I go and I am so sorry to say that the Ghost Rider movie was a total disappointment for me.

How bad was it?

It was so bad that I didn’t even make it to the movie’s halfway point. I finished my popcorn and my drinks and now had no more incentive to stay inside the cinema and finish the show.

It’s really sad when your popcorn and soda is more interesting than the movie.

First off, let me say that I had such high hopes for the movie considering everything going for it.

The rich material in terms of stories and history of the comic books, excellent actors, and a creative group of people (David Goyer, Avi Arad, Stan Lee, etc.) who are no strangers bringing the world of comic books into the silver screen. Instead I got a bad western with a bit of recycled Blade Movie sequences thrown in and an overabundance of shots FHM would be proud of (which could be a plus depending on how you look at it).

Don’t worry; I won’t get into the movie’s story in consideration for those people who are planning to see it.

Let me just say, that the story could’ve used work, to say the least.

David Goyer, the guy who wrote the screenplay for the Blade Movie franchise (and arguably brought it to greatness and, conversely, brought it low as well), should’ve been wearing his writer’s hat for this one. Instead he is credited as Executive Director.

The film was sterile for the most part and campy for the rest, though I wasn’t sure if the camp was intended or unintentional. It wasn’t as much as the pacing than the treatment. The movie failed to make me care for the characters and hence involve me in the narrative.

The casting had an ensemble that included Nicholas Cage, Peter Fonda, and Eva Mendes.

This is one of the worst acting I’ve seen from Nicholas Cage and I usually like his onscreen personas. Peter Fonda was under utilized considering his range and experience as a veteran actor. Eva Mendes was two-dimensional and served merely as eye candy.

She was delicious eye candy to be sure but it gets tiring after she sticks her tits and ass at the camera for the nth time.

The visual effects were mediocre at best. I’ve seen better ones on games.

I’d like to say that this is a movie that only Ghost Rider fans can appreciate but, seeing as I am also a Ghost Rider fan, I sincerely doubt that.

That’s not a review. Have the patience to sit through the film before reviewing it. You haven’t seen it yet. You’re too impatient.
