This is a sketch of Agila, a character from the first Pinoy RPG game, Anito by Anino Entertainment. We were trying to pitch a graphic novel based from the game (but things didn’t push through for one reason or the other).
I tend to pencil quite tightly, as you can see from the image. This was some time ago and I was still using a clutch pencil back then (I use non-repro blue pencils nowadays…easier to clean up in Photoshop). What I’d do is to do a more or less finished pencil piece before starting on the inking process.
I don’t actually black-out all the shadows during inking. Instead I just wait until everything’s done and cleaned up then I use the Photoshop’s paint bucket tool to fill it all in.
Saves time and ink.
Also shown here is the inked piece which we used in the presentation to the guys over at Anino Entertainment.
I used UNIpins of varying line weights (I haven’t discovered penbrushes as of yet back then) to ink the drawing.
I don’t use a lot of hatchings and cross-hatchings techniques in my drawings. I tend to use solid blacks and some feathering effect here and there but not more than that.
Even now, when my work has evolved from a realistic-oriented style to a more cartoony/animated themed linework, these particular techniques stay with me.
Drawn on a one-ply bristol board, rough.
