There’re plans for a Komiks Congress this coming February. Its primary objective is to ”promote awareness in the past Glory of the Philippine Komiks Industry and to create new actions to refresh it and be able to campaign for public acceptance once again”.
I share fellow comic creator John Becaro’s hopes that this is a serious effort to revitalize the Philippine Comic Book Industry and not as a means to an end for some political agenda.
I’d like to pitch an idea which I believe may help the local comic industry get back in the swing of things: tax holidays for comic book publishers.
Let’s face it. Publishing is a risky business and even more so for comic book publishers. We got a lot of good artists and writers now, some of them doing work for publishers outside the country and earning accolades from all over the world.
We got that part covered.
What we need right now are more investors in the playing field but considering how risky it is, added incentive may be needed to entice more businessmen to invest in comic books again.
One such incentive could be tax holidays. In fact, I would even go as far as proposing that comic book publishers be given a 5-6 years tax holiday. Money that would otherwise go to taxes can instead be spent on producing more comic books and/or giving comic book artists better pay and benefits. It would also give publishers a better chance at staying in the game longer, also increasing the possibility that they would become profitable, which would bring us much more closer to reviving a much beloved industry.
That being said, I wish you guys all the luck! Make us proud!

[…] I can think of lots of other ways to kickstart things: tax holidays for Komiks publishers to entice more investors and create more opportunities for everyone in the industry, creation of a body whose sole purpose is to research new profitable avenues for Komiks and market our collective work outside the country, laws to protect intellectual property rights, and royalty programs just to name a few.
